Google today is celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of George Boole, an English mathematician, logician, and philosopher.
Born on November 2, 1815, in Lincoln, England, Boole is best known as author of The Laws of Thought and inventor of Boolean algebra. He became a teacher at the age of 16 despite lacking a formal education. He established his own school in Lincoln at the age of 19.
Boole worked in the fields of differential equations and algebraic logic, and is best known as the author of The Laws of Thought which contains Boolean algebra.
The Doodle shows 'logic gates' that are used in computing and are derived from Boolean functions.
Boole is known as the "father of the information age" because of his contributions to modern computer science through his invention of Boolean algebra. His theories were published in the 1854 book An Investigation of the Laws of Thought.
First mathematician to receive Gold Medal for Mathematics from Royal Society, Boole died of pneumonia in 1864, when he was 49 years old, after he walked two miles through cold rain and then lectured wearing his wet clothes, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
