Will Bangalore Have Lockdown ? Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai rules out
BENGALURU: The state government is likely to continue with night curfew beyond January 7 in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases and the threat of the Omicron variant. It is also considering more containment measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.
A final decision on curbs will be taken by the state cabinet on Thursday. Prior to that, on Wednesday, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai will hold consultations with members of the state Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
“We are monitoring the pandemic situation and the spread of Omicron,” Bommai said on Monday. “The virus is spreading very quickly across the country, so we need to discuss measures with experts before bringing it before the cabinet.”
Sources say the government may impose weekend curfew, provided health experts and the cabinet endorse the plan. But Bommai ruled out any measure that will have a direct impact on the livelihoods of people.
“We have the experience of handling two previous Covid waves,” he said.
“Experts have been asked to suggest appropriate measures to control the spread without affecting the daily lives of people.”
After launching the vaccination drive for children in the 15-18 age group, Bommai said students need to be brought under a secure bubble. An extensive vaccination campaign has been planned for the purpose. He urged stakeholders to follow norms like wearing masks and maintaining social distance.
“We need coordinated efforts from parents, teachers, and health workers to make the vaccination drive a success,” he said.
“We have a target of vaccinating around 4. 4 lakh children across the state including 30,000 children in Bengaluru on the first day. The second dose will be administered after 28 days, while booster doses will be given to people aged above 60 with comorbidities after January 10.”
