What is National Handloom Day | History, Significance and Why National Handloom Day is Celebrated

National Handloom Day 2021: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day in 2015 to salute weavers and to promote handmade and handwoven.


The day also highlights the handloom industry and is celebrated on 7 August annually. It also focuses on the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and increase the income of the weavers.


National Handloom Day: History


In July 2015, the Union government declared 7 August as National Handloom Day with an aim to generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry. On 7 August 2015, the first National Handloom Day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai

National Handloom Day 2021: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day in 2015 to salute weavers and to promote handmade and handwoven.


The day also highlights the handloom industry and is celebrated on 7 August annually. It also focuses on the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and increase the income of the weavers.


In July 2015, the Union government declared 7 August as National Handloom Day with an aim to generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry. On 7 August 2015, the first National Handloom Day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai.


Why was 7 August chosen as National Handloom Day?


To commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, 7 August was chosen as National Handloom Day. Swadeshi Movement was launched on 7 August, 1905 in the Calcutta Town hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British Government. The objective of the movement was also to revive domestic products and production processes.


National Handloom Day: Celebrations


According to MoS Textile Smt. Darshana Jardosh, the Handloom sector is a symbol of our country’s rich and varied cultural heritage.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 75th year of Independence, has urged all of us as a nation to buy Indian Handloom products and showcase their grandeur by associating with #MyHandloomMyPride. 


At the National level, “My Handloom My Pride Expo” is being organised from 1 August to 15 August 2021 at Dilli Haat, INA, New Delhi by National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) to celebrate the 7th National Handloom Day.


No doubt the Expo will provide direct access to the Handloom weavers of several areas of India, to market their genuine Handloom products to consumers. Through this, handloom agencies not only market their products at reasonable rates but also come to know the choice of customers regarding colour, design, and weaving for future improvement of the product.


More than 125 Handloom agencies/ National awardees belonging to 22 states are participating.


From 11 am to 8 pm, the exhibition will be open to the public till 15 August, 2021 and it is expected that more than 10000 people will visit the exhibition.
