16 Makeup Mistakes That Are Actually Ageing You

16 Makeup Mistakes That Are Actually Ageing You

The only rule of makeup is to bring your best face forward and to experiment as much as you want.
While you don’t have to settle for one look or one particular style, there are certain techniques that will actually age you.
Freshen up your gorgeous face by taking these 16 makeup mistakes out of your beauty routine.

1. Using the wrong shade of blush.

Blush is your friend, but it can become your enemy if you choose a color that's too dark or too bright. While adding a soft peachy or rosy tint will add a youthful touch to entire face, a darker hue will only make you look tired.

2. Not following a skincare routine.

Beyoncé might wake up flawless, but us mortals have to take extra care of our skin. Dry, oily, tired, and cracked skin is the worst canvas to apply makeup on. After cleansing and toning your face, remember to apply a moisturizer with SPF.

3. Using shimmer eyeshadows over the crease.

Let's thank the makeup gods for matte transition shades that frame our eyes effortlessly. Shimmer eyeshadows accentuate creases and wrinkles, so for the best look, apply shimmer in the inner corners of the eyes, and the center of the lids.

4. Not blending enough.

Foundation can look like second skin if you learn to master the art of blending. If you feel like you've blended enough, chances are you're wrong. For an airbrushed looked, use a damp beauty blender, and give your arm a workout to avoid harsh lines.

5. Wearing concealer that's too light.

Wearing a heavy concealer that's too light for your skin will make you look tired. Lighter colors bring attention to an area, so if your skin is already wrinkling up, moisturize and stick to a concealer shade that's just one or two shades lighter.

6. Highlighting where you shouldn’t be.

Highlighters are supposed to bring forward the highest points of your face, making you shine bright like a diamond. But if you have textured or wrinkled skin, you'll also be bringing all of that forward. Play it safe by using it above your cheekbones and cupid's bow.

7. Going crazy with eye shadow.

Here's the thing: You can pack on as many layers of eye shadows as you like. You do you, boo. But if you want to enhance your eyes, go for matte, neutral shades. Avoid adding too many colors at once, as colors highlight problem areas.

8. Using a ton of powder.

Our skin gets drier as we age, so we need to moisturize it often. Powder absorbs oil and moisture, which often leaves the skin dry and tired. If you absolutely need it, apply the tiniest bit of powder only on areas where you get oily.

9. Adding too many layers of foundation.

"Perfect skin" is a total myth. No one's skin is perfect — unless we're talking about a baby, of course. But foundation can be your BFF if you apply it correctly. Moisturize the skin, add primer, and slowly build up small amounts of foundation. Less is more.

10. Overlining the lips.

Don't draw attention to the fine lines around the mouth by overdoing it with the lip liner. Instead, follow your natural lip line, and pick a liner that matches your lipstick. You can always try a creamy lipstick pencil and draw slightly outside the lip line area for a fuller effect.

11. Only using black eyeliner.

We've been overdosing on black eyeliner for way too long! Add a pop of color to your makeup by choosing a color that enhances your beautiful peepers. Use a color wheel to find an eyeliner shade that would bring some badass contrast to your eye color.

12. Baking poorly-hydrated under eyes.

Baking is a technique where you pack on layers of powder under the eyes, let it "bake," and then brush it all off. Big mistake if you have dehydrated or mature skin. Instead, moisturize, apply concealer, and skip the powder altogether. You need all the moisture you can get.

13. Skipping the primer.

Primer doesn't just keep your makeup in place, it provides a smoother finish, and reduces the sight of fine lines and pores. Moisturize your skin first, and look for a primer that has anti-aging and pore-minimizing benefits.

14. Not removing makeup at night.

Removing makeup after a long day seems exhausting, but it's a vital step in your skincare routine that shouldn't be skipped. Not doing so can make your skin look older, cause breakouts, wrinkles, and even put you at risk of infection, as it compromises the skin barrier.

15. Skipping the lipstick.

We lose lip pigmentation as we age, so add some color to brighten your look — just don't overdo it. Steer clear of darker shades if you're going for a youthful look, as dark colors will make your lips look smaller.

16. Neglecting your eyebrows.

Fierce brows are important because they frame your eyes, giving your face a natural lift. It's normal for them to get sparse with age, so bring your best face forward with a full set of brows. Define and shape them with brow gel or pencil.

There's nothing wrong with getting older, but there's no reason to speed up the process.

Follow these tips, and you'll look fresh-faced in no time!

  1. Useful post about makeup, It’s best to learn from other’s mistakes than to feel the urge to commit one by oneself & then think of learning. I think we’ve all made some of these mistakes to some degree or another. I'm glad that you have shared all these mistakes here.
