Your Parents Are Probably Ashamed Of You And It's Fine

Your Parents Are Probably Ashamed Of You And It's Fine

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received was "No one is as concerned with you as you are."

If I hadn't gotten that, I would've lost what's left of my mind years ago. But it's natural to wonder what your parents think of you. They're probably the only people who should be as concerned with you as you are, right?
Well...kinda.

It's not like all parents are ashamed of their kids. Just most of them.
I mean, when's the last time anything turned out the way you wanted it to?

But that's not your problem.

Who could possibly expect people raised in the '60s and '70s to be able to deal with the utter insanity that is 2017?

Your parents are idiots like everyone else. They just grew up in a world that was a lot more forgiving of idiots.
It's not like their generation had the world handed to them on a silver platter...but on a plastic fast food tray? Sure.

The world isn't the same for people coming of age now. It's not all bad, though.

We get some perks that our parents didn't. Namely, the internet in all of its awesomeness and awfulness.

No generation before us has had the opportunity to watch their parents go absolutely insane on Facebook, which is very convenient if you want to witness your idols falling right before your eyes.

And oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Eventually, I think we all reach a point where we're as weirdly ashamed and proud of our parents as they are of us.

It was never going to be just one or the other.

And that makes a lot of sense when you figure that they had to watch you learn to use a toilet, and you have to watch them learn that sunlight doesn't destroy photos on memory cards.

Kids are weird, savage little monsters.

Just think: Each time you're wishing your mom and dad were proud of you, they're having a Vietnam flashback to dealing with this:

But at the end of the day, we're stuck with each other.

No one is 100% in control of anything, but if you keep it real with your parents and they do the same, then shame is the least of your worries.
