Netflix Has Cancelled 'House Of Cards' Amid Allegations Against Kevin Spacey

The Emmy-nominated political drama House of Cards will come to an end following its upcoming sixth season in 2018. 

The news comes less than 24 hours after the show's star Kevin Spacey responded to allegations that he made sexual advances toward a 14-year-old actor in the 1980s. 

The allegations were made by veteran Broadway actor Anthony Rapp to Buzzfeed earlier this week

 Spacey responded to the allegations in a statement on Twitter.

According to his statement, Spacey does not remember the incident, but he says if it did happen it was "deeply inappropriate drunken behavior."

Spacey has received a lot of backlash online for coming out in response to the allegations. 

Media Rights Capital and Netflix, who produce House of Cards, released a statement saying they are "deeply troubled" by the allegations against Spacey. 

“In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time,” the statement said.

However, a spokesperson for Netflix has said that the decision to end the show was not related to the allegations and had been planned for several months. 

 House of Cards has been a Netflix mainstay since 2013 and was one of the network's first original programs to earn widespread acclaim. The series has been nominated for 53 Emmy Awards, including five nominations for outstanding drama series.

Both Spacey and his co-star Robin Wright have won Golden Globes for their work on the show. 

Fans of the show have taken to Twitter to express both sadness and praise about the news. 

Many fans were quick to point out that the show's lead role could easily be taken over by Robin Wright's character Claire Underwood. 

According to Variety, a spinoff is already in the early stages of development. 

One concept revolves around House of Cards political aide-de-camp Doug Stamper, but at least two other spinoff ideas are being explored.
