Fashion Companies Are Banning Models Below Size Zero

The fashion industry is known for idolizing a certain body shape. Say what you will about America's Next Top Model, but Tyra Banks was committed to showing the world that more than one body type can be a beautiful model. And now, some huge names in fashion are getting on board with this. 

The fashion industry has always faced criticism for hiring extremely thin models for campaigns or runway shows. 

In France, there was a law passed where models who want to work there will have to hand over a doctor's note that proves they are healthy and are at an appropriate BMI.

Kering and LVMH, French fashion companies, are instituting a hiring ban on models who are below size 0. 

"We hope to inspire the entire industry to follow suit, thus making a real difference in the working conditions of fashion models industry-wide," Kering CEO said.

This is a huge deal since these two companies own labels such as Christian Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, and Gucci.

 The two companies said their charter was focused on "the well-being of models."

Let's hope this encourages other fashion brands to do the same! 

Let's not promote an unhealthy body image. We shouldn't be body shaming, regardless of what body type a person has. If a person is naturally skinny or naturally a size zero, that's fine! It's good that the fashion industry wants to stop models from attaining that impossible goal if their body wasn't built to be that size.
