Fitness Blogger Sheds Light On Common PMS Symptom
I'm going to be totally honest for a second here – and for some of you, I may be revealing a little bit too much information, but c'est la vie. If I could change one thing about being a woman, it would be the eliminating the amount of pain and discomfort I feel every month during my period. Now, I know there are plenty of women out there who experience worse symptoms than I do, but seriously, there have been times where I have wondered if my life was coming to an end — the pain is just too much! And while menstruating is a normal, healthy bodily function, sometimes it can bring you to your wits' end.
Even though it can be an extremely unpleasant time of the month, I am happy that more and more women are talking about their periods and making society as a whole realize that it isn't something that is disgusting or wrong.
And the more discussion that happens surrounding this area of women's health, the better.
Malin Olofsson is a body-positive fitness blogger who has helped shine a light on a number of health-related issues.
Not only did she battle anorexia for 15 years, but she also experiences a very visible sign of PMS each and every month.
While it was something she would have once been ashamed of and hidden from the rest of the world, Malin decided to share this aspect of her life with her 15,000+ Instagram followers.
She posted a photo of her severely bloated stomach and captioned it was an inspiring message that she hopes will help other women better deal with the same side effect.
"Water retention is a very normal and common symptom of PMS. Some women will hardly notice it and some go through immense discomfort for a couple of days a month."
Not only does Malin want to make others aware of how severe and uncomfortable bloating can be, but she also wants to assure other women that there is nothing wrong with them or their bodies when it happens.
She encourages her followers to spend difficult moments like this taking care of themselves, rather than being disgusted with the way their bodies look.
"This is nothing to be ashamed of. Yes – it is very uncomfortable, and yes – it is really difficult to not feel like you must hide it and try to suck your stomach in. I've stopped. I've decided that breathing is more important than what other people may or might think."
To see what Malin's bloated stomach actually looks like, head over to the third and final page.
"Realize that this is when you need extra self-care and self-love. Realize that you don't have to be ashamed and hide. You are perfect and your body is just doing its job."
So far, Malin's post has over 9,000 likes and many of the comments commend her strength and willingness to put herself out there in order to help others.
low_gravity_spacecraft: "Thank you for this. I always get upset during my cycle when this happens (right now!) It is nice to know I am not alone."
jodess91: "This!!! Finally someone showing how it is. Thank you for sharing x"
And of course, all of the positive feedback has had a major impact on Malin.
"Thank you so much for all the support on my last post!! I was really hesitant towards posting it since I knew that it would cause reactions and be a feast for trolls. But you know what? If such post can help just ONE person to feel less alone and less ashamed then it is 100% worth it."
