12 Foods You Should Remove From Your Kitchen RIGHT AWAY
What about Milk and canned food (yes, Canned food has a shelf life too)...
Then there's spoiled fruits and vegetables which deserves its own page...
We need to talk.
There are things in your fridge that gross people out. There are things in your kitchen that absolutely have to go. And look, l I don't blame you, because just until writing this article I did a crapload of these things too. Food is one of those things you don't screw around with. If you do, you risk getting food poisoning – or clogging up the plumbing, so to speak. Each year, 76 million people in the U.S. become sick from food-borne illnesses.
Here are some things you should be aware of – so you can get rid of all this bad stuff in your kitchen!
SHARE with people who should know this info! I know I wouldn't want my kids or friends eating this stuff.
1. Meat or poultry: Cut red meats lasts about 3-5 days, cooked meat lasts 3 to 4 days. If you need it longer, store it in the freezer.
Be aware of: Smell – Spoiled meat will have a distinct, pungent smell.
Texture – Spoiled meats can be sticky or slimy.
Color – Spoiled poultry will turn bluish-white to yellow in color. Raw pork turns a grayish-pink. Ground beef will turn bright red to purplish-red to even a brownish-red, but it's harder to tell.
2. Rice should be thrown out if:
- It's super hard and dry, or
- it's been unrefrigerated for too long
- it's been cooled and reheated too many times
- or it straight-up smells bad.
3. Eggs should be eaten before the “sell by” date. They should last you 3-5 weeks after you put them in the fridge.
You'll know they're bad: If it floats in a glass of cold water. Or it makes a sloshing sound when you shake it. An egg that spreads or seems a little watery has a thinner white and is past its peak freshness.
4. Bacon (or hot dogs) are only good for one week after opening the package.
If it smells sour or rotting it's time to ditch it. The same if you notice that the bacon looks dull, has green dots all over, or the flesh is turning a gray-brown.
5. Milk should last a week after the "sell by" date.
Signs are if it smells sour and tastes off or stale. Curdling and thickening are telltale signs too.
6. Lunch meat can last at least a week after opening the package.
Opened Bologna lasts for 1-2 weeks in fridge
Opened Salami lasts for 2-3 Weeks
Pepperoni lasts for 2-3 weeks
But you can keep it twice as long or a bit more if you put it in the freezer instead.
7. Fish should be odorless and not be curling at the edges..
If it smells or curls at the edges, you have to get rid of it!
8. Canned foods like Tomato soup lasts 18 months and others can last 5 years.
NEVER eat from a can that's bulging or leaking. The point is to keep them out of the humidity.
9. Citrus fruit with a rind means you have to rip it open to find out if it's fresh.
If it's an orange or grapefruit and only has mold on the outside, you can peel it away and eat it. BUT if the mold has spread to the flesh of the fruit or if you can poke through the rind, get rid of it.
10. Grapes, apples, peaches and cherries if they're wrinkly.
Or if they're peeling that means they've begun to spoil. If they're smooth, you're in the clear
11. Fruits with a harder outside like pineapples and melons: you gotta feel 'em.
These types of fruit should be firm when you eat them and they get softer as they age. If they're smelly or if they're squishy and soft — toss them away.
12. And finally, potatoes: once they turn green or have sprouts get rid of them!
There's a toxin called solanine that changes the color. It's not an old wives tale!
