When She Was 9 Years Old She Was Severely Burned. Now She's A Makeup Sensation

Some people wear makeup to hide their face. Others wear it to accentuate certain features. And some wear it just to feel good about themselves. No one needs a reason or explanation for why they wear makeup. But makeup can change a person's appearance. It is so powerful you can become a completely different person. Makeup can also be used to learn how to love yourself. Makeup can be a tool to find your true self and learn to accept the person you are. This young girl has used makeup to do just that—love and value herself.

When Shalom Nchom was nine years old, she was severely burned.

There was an accident with frying oil at her family's store and she was severely burned on her face, head, arms, hands, and upper chest.

“Life after the accident wasn’t what I thought it would be."

“I was stared at by kids and older people whenever I stepped out. I felt like a living statue that people came to see. It pushed me to be rude towards anyone who stared at me. I cursed people out and cried on many occasions.”

But then she discovered makeup when she was 13 years old.

She started to feel more comfortable and soon the bullying stopped. Eventually classmates were paying Shalom $5-25 to do their makeup.

Now at 20 years old Shalom is a makeup guru.

She creates makeup tutorials for YouTube under the name Shalom Blac and even made a video for the #powerofmakeup trend where only one side of the face is shown in full makeup to show that with or without makeup, everyone is beautiful. But she includes a very important message in her own version of the trend.

Makeup is not the reason why I am happy."

"I’m happy because I love myself.” She wants the people who watch her videos to "not only learn how to do makeup but...learn to live and love themselves for who they truly are.”

"As a burn survivor...

...it gives me a chance to share my passion with others that may be going through similar things — or better yet, inspire someone to love who they see in the mirror."
