10 cricketers who have got into trouble due to alcohol

Cricketers have more often landed themselves into trouble because of alcohol. From punching an opponent to missing crucial team meetings, there is no end to such rowdy behavior of the players. Such incidents have led to bans and fines by the respective cricket boards. Here is the list of ten cricketers who landed themselves in trouble because of alcoholic issues.

JAMES FAULKNER
James Faulkner, the Australian all-rounder, was recently suspended for four international matches by Cricket Australia for driving under the influence of Alcohol. While playing for Lancashire, Faulkner crashed his car after a night out drinking in Manchester with his Tasmania teammate Tim Paine and was found to have been more than twice over the legal blood alcohol limit. The board acted swiftly under the board’s code of conduct to suspend the all-rounder. He was also warned for his behavior in the near future.

DAVID WARNER

He punched Joe Root after being under the influence of alcohol in 2013. The Australian opener thought that Root was making fun of Muslim’s especially Hashim Amla, which led to the incident at one of the bars. Warner was dropped for Australia’s campaign in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy following the attack on an England cricketer. He later apologized for his actions and promised to control his temper in the future. The player was even blasted from former Australian players.

ANDREW SYMONDS

In early June 2009, Symonds was sent home from the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in England following a late-night drinking episode after a team dinner. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland called a press conference to announce Symonds’ dismissal, which was likely to mark the end of his international cricket career. His Cricket Australia contract was also reviewed and later cancelled. In June 2009, Symonds told Channel Nine’s Sixty Minutes that he was not an alcoholic but merely a binge-drinker.

JESSE RYDER

New Zealand’s opener Jesse Ryder has more often landed himself in trouble because of his drinking habits. Once he landed himself in a problem when he injured his hand while trying to damage a window in order to enter a toilet in a bar in Christchurch. Apart from this, he almost ended his life because of a brawl in 2013. Ryder was in a critical condition at Christchurch Hospital after being assaulted outside the Aikman’s Bar in Merivale, Christchurch. He was in an induced coma for 56 hours before recovering.

RICKY PONTING

He was a spoiled brat in the starting phase of his career. The great Australian captain had to deal with alcohol relate d issues. Ponting, who had a black left eye, said he had no recollection of the incident, which occurred in a club in the King’s Cross area of the city during the early hours, following Australia’s loss to England at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1999. He said the next thing he remembered was being in the team’s hotel. Ricky Ponting promised to solve the issue and to his credit he did.

MONTY PANESAR

Monty Panesar became England’s number one spinner following Ashley Giles’ retirement but his drinking habits led to his downfall. He was fined for urinating in public near the Shooshh Club at King’s Road Arches, Brighton, on 5 August 2013. According to the Sun newspaper, Panesar was told to leave the club because he was harassing women, and he later urinated from the promenade above the venue on to bouncers standing below. He played his last international match in 2013 and it looks that his career is almost over.

ANDREW FLINTOFF

England was defeated by New Zealand in the opening match of the World Cup in 2007. On the evening of England’s defeat, Flintoff was indulged in some late night drinking in a night club along with fellow players. In the early hours of the morning, he reportedly had to be rescued after falling off a pedalo - this quickly became known in the media as the “Fredalo” incident. Flintoff and the others involved were reprimanded and fined and with Flintoff being stripped of the vice-captaincy and, in addition, he was suspended for the match against Canada.

BEN STOKES

He was sent home from the Lions tour of Australia in disgrace after ignoring warnings about his drinking in 2013. Ben Stokes, the highly talented but wayward Durham allrounder, was banished for ‘unprofessional conduct’ after previously being given written warnings for his excessive behavior on tour. ‘I would like to apologize for the way in which I acted. I am determined to bounce back from this situation and I regret my actions off the field. I look forward to getting back to my county to begin pre-season,’ he had said after being sent home by the management.

GARY BALANCE

England batsman Gary Ballance was warned over his conduct by the then coach Peter Moores after pictures emerged of him topless in a Nottingham nightclub during a boozy night in 2014. The England and Wales Cricket Board had said that Ballance was reminded of his responsibilities by Moores in the build-up to the second Test against India at Lord’s after he was pictured dancing in the nightclub and was then, according to an eyewitness, carried out drunk.

LIAM PLUNKETT

Plunkett was taken to Durham City police station, where he was tested and found to have 74mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, over double the legal limit of 35mg.
